Benoît Mandelbrot, Novel Mathematician, Dies at 85 - Obituary (Obit) - NYTimes.com

Dr. Mandelbrot traced his work on fractals to a question he first encountered as a young researcher: how long is the coast of Britain? The answer, he was surprised to discover, depends on how closely one looks. On a map an island may appear smooth, but zooming in will reveal jagged edges that add up to a longer coast. Zooming in further will reveal even more coastline.

“Here is a question, a staple of grade-school geometry that, if you think about it, is impossible,” Dr. Mandelbrot told The New York Times earlier this year in an interview. “The length of the coastline, in a sense, is infinite.”

Death of a legend.

Friday Night Grilling

Nothing like grilling up some goodies on a Friday in July.

Our second meal from the grill consisted of organic chicken breasts.
They were "pre-treated" in the kitchen with some sea salt, fresh
ground pepper and rosemary then thrown over a medium-high flame. One
turn 3-4 minutes into the action along with a slathering of bbq sauce
yielded three delicious, juicy chicken breasts.

I couldn't have been happier with the performance of the grill, the
way the food turned out or the "oohs," "ahhs" and "mmms" that were
heard after the first bites back in the dining room.

First Burgers on the New Grill

I grilled hamburgers stuffed with brie cheese on the brand new grill
tonight. They came out very well, nice and juicy. They rounded out a
bit more than I would've liked and they probably could've been removed
a minute or two sooner. But, for the first meal from the new grill,
they were super tasty.

BBQ Ingredients: Worcestershire Sauce

"Lea and Perrins were not impressed with their initial results. The pair found the taste unpalatable, and simply left the jars in their cellar to gather dust. A few years later, they stumbled across them and decided to taste the contents again. To their delight, the aging process had turned it into a delicious, savory sauce."

Great story about a great ingredient!

NJ Political Corruption - Ocean County Style

Media_httpcmsimgappco_xsedv

No, nothing to see here unless you happen to be interested in what's wrong with New Jersey.

This is just one piece of the puzzle - public officials who get paid with tax dollars and then reap windfalls in back room deals while milking their residents, residents who pay the highest property taxes in the country. Where do those tax dollars go? To support upstanding folks like the multi-millionaire school superintendent pictured above.

It's shameful and it needs to change.

Quick Question

Holding hands on the beach is nice, but I wonder how all those politicians actually got themselves to the beach that day?
